stART- Alphabet Mystery.... Sandpaper Rubbing...

A story + Art = a great stART!!!

This week we read alphabet mystery... so so so cute!!! This is about the lower case (little) letters.... but one is missing... (little x).... the rest of the alphabet is off on an adventure in attempt to find him... I am not going to give the story away... but... being a children's book... you could probably guess whether or not they locate him... ;-)
I gently taped a sandpaper "x" underneath the paper... so it would appear when they colored over it... I have also done similar projects with a white crayon for the mystery picture... and watercolor paints...I recently saw another alphabet sandpaper rubbing on Totally Tots...
After they found the little "x".... they put Alphabet stickers on the paper...
The finished mystery projects.. if you look very carefully... you will find the little "x" in the center of the other letters...

stART - The Great Big Pumpkin

A Story + Art = a great stART!!!

For our story this week, we read Care Bears, The Great Big Pumpkin....I pretty much LOVE all that is Care Bear...so obviously I thought this book was adorable.... The Care Bears get ready for a Halloween party by getting their costumes ready (three of them go as stars) and picking out their pumpkins....For our project this week, we made magically appearing pumpkins... With white crayon I drew a jack-o-lantern on each of the girl's paper. (Without telling them what was on them)... Then they used watercolor to paint the paper and reveal the surprise... I have done this project (well similar- not with pumpkins) a few times and Ryleigh loves finding out what the picture is...
Ryleigh starting to watercolor...it was here that she decided it was a pumpkin....even though you can't actually see it yet...
Midway through the project... with a little brush it takes awhile...
The finished pumpkins... Ryleigh's is on the bottom...
*The Ramblings and Adventures of a SAHM is now on facebook---I would love it if you became a "fan"....

stART- Harold and the Purple Crayon

A story + art = a great stART!
Harold and the Purple Crayon is one of Ryleigh's favorite books and is read quite often. It is about a little boy (Harold) who has a grand imagination and uses his purple crayon to bring his adventures to life.

For our stART project this week, we made big muffin tin crayons (rainbow crayons)...
  1. Get together some crayons that you would not mind melting down...I suggest the crayons from restaurants...they melt quickly and...and this is the MOST IMPORTANT PART...their wrappers slide right off!
  2. Set the oven to 350 degrees.
  3. Peel and break all the crayons.
  4. Arrange the crayons into the color schemes that you want...in the muffin tin.
  5. Turn the oven off when it reaches the correct temperature...as long as you are ready to put the crayons in...
  6. Put the muffin tin in the oven for 15-20 min...depending on how fast your crayons are melting.
  7. When completely melted let cool for an hour or two....then use a knife to gently slide out.
Ryleigh picking out some shades of purple for our purple/blue crayon...
Ryleigh breaking the crayons into pieces and then peeling the paper off of them...
The crayons broken up and arranged by color in the muffin tin...
Our finished crayons...so pretty!
