A story + art = a great stART!
Harold and the Purple Crayon is one of Ryleigh's favorite books and is read quite often. It is about a little boy (Harold) who has a grand imagination and uses his purple crayon to bring his adventures to life.
For our stART project this week, we made big muffin tin crayons (rainbow crayons)...

- Get together some crayons that you would not mind melting down...I suggest the crayons from restaurants...they melt quickly and...and this is the MOST IMPORTANT PART...their wrappers slide right off!
- Set the oven to 350 degrees.
- Peel and break all the crayons.
- Arrange the crayons into the color schemes that you want...in the muffin tin.
- Turn the oven off when it reaches the correct temperature...as long as you are ready to put the crayons in...
- Put the muffin tin in the oven for 15-20 min...depending on how fast your crayons are melting.
- When completely melted let cool for an hour or two....then use a knife to gently slide out.
What a great idea to go w/ the book - we did these crayons about 7months ago - what fun! :)
ReplyDeleteThe finished crayons do look lovely - just to hold, never mind actually drawing with them!
ReplyDeleteI love making crayons they look so pretty! I need to remember to save those crayons from restaurants your right they would be perfect!
ReplyDeleteI wonder what Harold would color with those? They turned out just, lovely.
ReplyDeleteRecycled are always a hit! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWe are saving all of our broken crayons so we can make our own someday too :) Yours came out so pretty!
ReplyDeleteoh, Harold was my oldest sons favorite when he was a wee one. It looks like you guys had a blast:)
ReplyDeleteGod Bless
Great go along craft to this story. Nice fine motor work to remove the papers too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. We will have to do this with some old broken crayons.
ReplyDeleteWe love Harold and his purple crayon!
ReplyDeleteMuffin tin crayons are great too and you are absolutely right about using the crayons from restaurants - much easier to get those wrappers off!
We love making these! Nice job :) Harold and the Purple Crayon is my 28 y/o brothers favorite book LOL
ReplyDeleteWhat a great project to go along with this book. I love saving up restaurant crayons to make our own rainbow crayons with. Thank you for linking up to stART :0)
ReplyDeleteLove this book! Fun project, too. :)
ReplyDeleteWe SO did Harold and the Purple Crayon this week too! I've been wanting to melt down crayons, but still need to pick up a cheap muffin tin from a thrift store - I don't want to use my good one!
ReplyDeleteFun! I have letter molds for crayons that would work great for this too. Can you believe I've never read the Harold books?
ReplyDeleteWe've never tried melting crayons. Does sound like a great project to pair with Harold and the Purple Crayon.
ReplyDeleteYour crayons look great! Wish I would have thought about the restaurant crayons, I ended up using a knife to get the wrappers off mine. Also, glad to see you didn't use muffin liners and they worked fine. We'll have to do it that way next time.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great project that is art and science at once. I still want to find some sort of star shaped forms, so the end result is somewhat more useful :) I admit that we haven't read Harold yet - it's constantly checked out in the library :(
