Musical Monday - Counting Song from Yesteryear...

Each week I teach a Mommy and Me Music Class...If you would like to read about why and how the class is taught please go here...

I am always on the lookout for cute/educational/fun songs for Music Class or Tot School...when I was visiting my friend Jen (a first grade teacher) for a play date we both sang some songs for our four kids... one of the songs Jen sang was something about counting and a fish....well...that's pretty much all I remembered by the time I got home...so I of course googled it...and found some history on the song...which is apparently from the 1700's...
I have tried this song with my music class and really like it...It helps reinforce counting from 1-10...and also helps learn Right...(as in Right vs. Left)...there are hand motions for 1-5; 6-10, "Why did you let it go" and "The little one on the Right"...

One, two, three, four, five,
Once I caught a fish alive,
Six, seven, eight, nine, ten,
Then I let it go again.
Why did you let it go?
Because it bit my finger so.
Which finger did it bite?
This little finger on my right.

Ryleigh holding up her hand counting from 1-5....
Hand motion for Why did you let it go?.... (palms up in a semi shrug..)

I love this song. Though I had no idea it was so old! A song we sang all the time with the toddlers at the Montessori where I worked is Ten Little Indians. The alternative lyrics at this site: http://bussongs.com/songs/10_little_indians.php
are the ones we used. Actually just the first 3 verses. Then we sang Watch the Indians shoot their arrows

We sing this song at a parent/child music class. Do you sing Little Red Wagon? It's a lap ride and Molly loves it!
